I am pleased to present NUS Business School's first bi-monthly issue of NUS Business Leads, an electronic newsletter of our School. We had a naming contest earlier, inviting faculty and staff as well as student and alumni representatives to send in their suggestions for the e-newsletter's name. 30 entries were received while one of our design consultants also came up with a name that seemed closest to our concept. The editorial team discussed and adjusted it, and NUS Business Leads was birthed. Some of the meanings of this name include leadership by the School, contacts, and opportunities. I am sure you can think of more.
With NUS Business Leads, we would like to share with our stakeholders a quick digest of the latest developments and activities at NUS Business School. We hope to become closer as a community among faculty, staff, students, alumni, as well as associates in the public and private sectors. This inaugural issue of NUS Business Leads is particularly significant as we welcome our new Dean Professor Christopher Tang. It also ushers in an even more exciting time ahead of us. Find out more about Chris in the Cover Special that follows (if you find it lengthier than expected, it is to do justice to a proper introduction).
Also, watch the "Perspective" space further down; it is a special section where any of our stakeholders can be invited to contribute a thought piece. Associate Professor Glenn Nosworthy has kindly kicked off the series of Perspective contributions with an informative article. The rest of you may hear from me about contributing too. Till then, I am looking forward to any feedback or suggestions from you for NUS Business Leads.
Cheers, Esther ▀
1 July 2002 saw Professor Christopher Tang join us as Dean of NUS Business School. Prior to this, Prof Tang was Senior Associate Dean at the Anderson School, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). (For his bio, please click here.) He has also served as Senior Advisor to NUS' President for the last two years. Prof Tang has visited NUS over the last 17 years as several of his friends and students who graduated from UCLA are faculty members here. So, when he was invited to take up the deanship at NUS Business School, it did not take long for him to say "yes". Indeed, he is excited about the opportunity to work with the "talented and committed" faculty, staff, students and alumni. Considering the reputation of NUS and NUS Business School in the global as well as regional arena, and the quality of the faculty and the students, he finds tremendous potential for the School to move to greater heights. Prof Tang wants to play a part in the development of the School and make a difference. He sees his role as that of a catalyst and facilitator, to draw the best from the existing structure and bring focus to our efforts. He believes in teamwork and is open to new ideas. He has consulted and shared his ideas with alumni, faculty and staff members on plans to achieve the School's long-term goal of becoming the best business school in Asia, with a world-class reputation for high-quality education and research. Action oriented, Prof Tang is passionate about what the School is embarking on. For the business curriculum, we are working together to add greater value for our students. Initiatives include expanding our global partnerships, so that our students can enjoy not only "ten thousand books" but also "ten thousand miles" (adapted from a Chinese saying) with opportunities to spend time abroad with our global partners, gaining fruitful international experiences. We also seek to develop global business leaders who care about the society. In addition, we hope to build a school community with a stronger teaching and research culture. We also work on developing closer ties with our global network of 23,000 alumni and establishing more linkages with the industry. Let's all join hands in taking NUS Business School to a new level! ▀

NUS Business School Alumni's initiatives galore
As the umbrella alumni association of NUS Business School with membership open to all graduates of the School, the NUS Business School Alumni (NUSBSA) is going places with its enterprising activities. An example of an initiative is the unique series of talk shows entitled "CEO - Unplugged" where three CEO's are invited each time to share about their private lives as the witty host interviews them live in front of a full-house audience. Start-Up@Singapore is another interesting one that presently involves NUSBSA, Center for Entrepreneurship (CET) and Industry & Technology Relations Office (INTRO), which jointly organize this highly-acclaimed National Techno-Venture Business Plan Competition. PERSPECTIVE Addressing Ethics and Social Responsibility in the Business Curriculum
The business world is being shaken almost weekly by revelations of corporate misdeeds. In the most recent high-profile instance, AOL Time Warner is being sued for inflating its online advertising revenues, and the case threatens to draw in other major firms. Cases such as these have been traumatic for shareholders, employees, and even national economies, yet they highlight the importance of ethics at all levels in organisations. At the NUS Business School, we believe that an appreciation of ethical and social responsibility is a critical element of a comprehensive business education, and we are introducing a number of innovative measures to address this in our undergraduate curriculum.
